Rules for Strung Along

for 3 to 5 players

ages 8 and up.

The Theme

It is a month before the county fair and you are getting the supplies for your afgans. The local craft store is selling yarn in big batches. But they want to clear their shelves and are making some 'interesting' choices regarding what is for sale putting together some weird combinations. It is your job to choose the right yarns to try to make a beautiful pattern.

Overview

In the center of the table are lots for sale, the same number as the amount of players. On their turn a player either takes a lot or adds to an existing one from the deck. Players want to have a few colors but a lot of each. Players only receive points for the first 3 colors losing points for any additional colors.

The player who gets the most points when the deck runs out wins the game.

COMPONENTS

  • 63 yarn cards (9 cards each in 7 colors)
  • 10 "+2" needle cards
  • 1 "timer" card
  • 3 wild cards
  • 5 lot tags
  • 5 score cards

PREPARATION

- Place one lot tag for each player in the game in the center of the table.
Place the unused lot tags cards back in the box. They will not be used in the game.
- Everyone takes a summary card. Players will decide if they are using the simple or advanced scoring side but all players should use the same scoring scheme.

-With 3 players, remove place one color of yarn cards back into the box.
- Each player takes one starting card of another color and places it on the table in his play area.
- Remove the "timer" card from the deck and shuffle the rest. Count out a stack of 15 cards. Place the timer card on top of the stack and then place the rest of the cards on top of the timer card. This will ensure that the timer card will come up indicating the game will end with enough cards left to finish the final round.

Choose the staring player and we are ready to begin.

GAMEPLAY

On a players turn, a player must do one of the two following actions:
A. draw and place a card in a lot or
B. purchase a lot of cards
Then play moves clockwise to the next player, unless that player has already taken a lot, in which case it continues clockwise until the first player who has not taken a lot this round.

It is possible a player may have multiple turns in a row if the other players take lots early.

When each player has taken a lot, the round ends and it is time to start a new round.

A. place a card from the draw deck

The player takes the top card from the deck and puts it face up next to any of the lots of cards that does not already have 3 yarn cards in it.

Players may not choose this action if there are already 3 cards next to all of the lot tags.

B. take a lot of yarn

The player takes the lot tag and all of the cards next to it. These cards are placed face up in front of the player, sorted into colors. The amount of each color card is public information and any player may ask to know at any time.

Players do not need to make a decision of which color a wild yarn card goes with yet. This card can be it's own row and the player can make that decision at the end of the game.

A player may not choose a lot tag that does not have any cards next to it.

Once a player takes a lot tag and the accompanying cards that player's turns are skipped for the rest of the round. The player will have to wait until next round to continue play.

End of a round

After each player has taken a lot the round ends.
Each player places the lot tag in the middle of the table and the next round begins with the player who ended the round by taking the last lot.

GAME END AND SCORING

When the "timer" card is drawn, this means it is the last round. This card is put aside and another card is drawn and placed as normal.

Once the round ends, all the remaining cards in the deck are discarded back to the box and scoring begins.

Players make the final decision about which color their wild cards are.

Each player counts the cards he has in each color. Players will then use the table on the summary cards to show the number of positive or negative points they will score for each color.

Each player chooses which 3 of his colors score positive points.
All other colors score negative points for the player.
Each "+2" cards scores 2 positive points.
Jacob has 1 Wild, 1 "+2" card, 6 green cards, 4 yellow cards, 3 red cards, and 2 blue cards. As he already score the most he can for his 6 green cards, he places his wild with his yellow cards.
Jacob scores 2 ("+2") + 21 (green) + 15 (yellow) + 6 (red) - 3 (blue) = 41 points.
