Smash Up: Oops, You Did It Again Rules

Oops, You Did It Again adds Ancient Egyptians, Cowboys, Samurai, and Vikings. It introduces two major rules systems: buried cards and duels. AEG later added Titans for Ancient Egyptians and Cowboys.

Burying cards

A card may be buried only when an ability tells you to do so. Place it face down beside the chosen base, facing its controller. Unless a card says to bury itself, the card is not shown to the other players.

A buried card is not treated as a minion or Action for abilities that target those card types, though an ability that targets “a card” can affect it when the rules permit. The player who buried it controls it and is treated as its owner while it remains buried. Its abilities are inactive.

At the start of each player's turn, that player may uncover one buried card they control. Other abilities can also uncover cards. An uncovered card is immediately played as an extra card: a minion is played at that base, an Action on a minion/base is attached legally there, and a standard Action resolves normally. If the card cannot legally be played at that moment, discard it.

When a card is uncovered, discard cards/counters that had been attached to the buried card as the comprehensive rules require. A self-burying card that is uncovered is not immediately reburied by the same self-bury instruction. Buried cards have no power by themselves. When their base scores or otherwise leaves play, buried cards still there go to the appropriate owners' discard piles.

Duels

When two minions duel, their controllers may each place one card from hand face down on the table, challenger first, then reveal the chosen cards starting with the challenger. If a revealed card is an Action, play it normally; if it is not an Action, return it to hand as a bluff. Placing a duel card is optional.

Duel cards on the table are temporarily not in hand, deck, discard pile, or play and cannot be targeted. No second duel may begin while a duel is unresolved. Other cards generally cannot be played or invoked during the duel unless they are permitted by the duel's Actions or specifically triggered by the duel.

After the duel Actions resolve, compare the dueling minions' current power. If the minions are no longer together at the same base, the duel ends without its win/loss consequence. A control change does not by itself end the duel. On a power tie, both sides are treated as winners for effects that care about winning/losing the duel as the initiating card specifies.

Ancient Egyptians

Mummy: Its after-scoring Special only works if Mummy is uncovered before scoring is fully finished. If used, bury Mummy directly at a different base before the old base is discarded; it does not pass through hand or discard pile.

Blessing of Anubis, Tomb Trap, and You Can Take It With You: When first played they reveal themselves and become buried. When later uncovered, they are played again but skip the initial self-bury instruction because an uncovered self-burying card is not immediately reburied.

Mummy Strength: Use current AEG errata: the larger bonus is +4 power when the chosen minion's base has a buried card.

Sphinx: This later Titan can enter by returning one of your buried cards to hand and can rescue a buried card after a base scores. It cannot return a buried Monster card to your hand because Monsters cannot legally enter player hands under the normal rules.

Cowboys

Deputy: During a duel involving your minion, you may wait until after the opponent reveals their duel card before deciding whether to discard Deputy for its power boost.

Pinkerton: Current functional errata allows its once-per-duel counter to affect your dueling minion regardless of Pinkerton's base. Pinkerton can boost itself in its own duel. Place the counter before duel cards are revealed.

Dynamite Surprise: Its anti-information Special triggers if another player's card reveals it from your hand or deck. Merely looking at it in your deck without revealing it does not trigger that Special.

High Noon: Only your winning minion gives you the extra minion play. If the opponent wins, the opponent does not receive your card's reward, and you receive no extra minion if your own minion was destroyed. “There” means the base where your winning minion is at the end of the duel.

Quick Draw: Determine the +4-versus-+2 amount when Quick Draw resolves. That amount does not change later if the minion starts or stops dueling.

Pecos Bill: This later official Titan supports the faction's duel and temporary-power mechanics under its current AEG text.

Samurai

Samurai reward your minions going to the discard pile from play, including normal scoring discard and destruction.

Bushi, Honor the Fallen, Samurai-Chan, Shogun, and similar abilities: “Goes to the discard pile from play” includes being discarded after a base scores and being destroyed. It does not include a card discarded directly from your hand.

Honor the Ancestors: The number of minions you may shuffle back is one for each other player: one in a two-player game, two in a three-player game, and three in a four-player game.

When several Samurai effects trigger from cards leaving a scoring base together, announce the complete group of cards going to discard, then resolve the created triggers in the appropriate order.

Vikings

Vikings steal or temporarily use cards they do not own, so ownership and location rules are especially important.

Cards in your hand that you do not own: While a stolen card is legally in your hand, treat it like your card for hand-based effects and you may play it as allowed. Once it leaves play or enters a public zone where the special effect no longer permits you to keep it, return it to its actual owner when the ownership rules require.

Berserk, Huscarl, Raider and similar top-deck effects: A card you do not own can be placed on top of your deck when the relevant effect specifically permits this hidden-zone movement.

Pillage: The random card taken from another player's hand becomes a card in your hand for the purposes of playing and hand effects until it later changes zones under the ownership rules.

Raiding Party, Ransack, Shield Maiden, and Valkyrie: Apply the same owner-versus-controller/holder distinction when manipulating opponents' cards.

Viking Funeral: A card placed in the box is out of play for the rest of the game unless some rule explicitly retrieves boxed cards.

Accessibility play notes

Buried cards must remain secret from other players, but their existence and controller are public. Keep each player's buried cards separated and tactilely identifiable without revealing their faces; announce “Richard has two buried cards at this base,” not the card names. When a card is uncovered, announce its name before resolving it.

For duels, announce challenger, challenged minion, each minion's current power, whether each player placed a face-down duel card, then reveal and resolve in order. Reannounce the two current powers before declaring the duel result. For Vikings, whenever a card changes hands, say its true owner and current holder/controller so it can return to the correct deck or discard pile later.
