Smash Up: Science Fiction Double Feature Rules
Smash Up: Science Fiction Double Feature Rules
This expansion uses the normal Smash Up rules and adds Cyborg Apes, Shapeshifters, Super Spies, and Time Travelers. Its major themes are actions played on minions, copying abilities, deck manipulation, and replaying cards.
Playing cards from the top of the deck
When an ability tells you to play a card of a specified type from the top of your deck, reveal cards until the required type is found, play that card if its play requirements can be met, and handle the other revealed cards as the ability directs. If the deck is empty before revealing, shuffle as normal; if it runs out while revealing, stop when no more cards are available.
Cyborg Apes
Cyborg Apes enhance minions with play-on-minion actions and reward keeping several upgrades on one minion.
Flying Monkey: After its base scores, the attached minion may move to another base, but not to the new base that replaces the base that just scored.
Missing Uplink: Its extra draw occurs at the end of the turn. Because the normal hand-size check occurs in the appropriate end-of-turn sequence, do not invent an additional hand-limit check simply because Missing Uplink drew another card.
Shielding: When played, it destroys other players' actions on the chosen minion as its current text says. Shielding does not protect itself from effects that can destroy actions; however, two Shieldings on the same minion can protect one another according to the current ability wording.
Primate Park: Use AEG's current errata. After the base scores, the winner may return their actions from minions there to hand as specified by the current base text.
Shapeshifters
Shapeshifters copy other cards and frequently destroy one of their own minions as the setup for playing a replacement.
Doppelgänger: Minions on a scored base are discarded before the replacement base appears, so the replacement minion found by Doppelgänger cannot be played onto that new replacement base. If another effect such as Transmogrify destroys Doppelgänger, both relevant triggered abilities may occur. If the selected replacement minion cannot legally be played, discard it.
Mimic: Its starting power is the highest printed power among minions in play and changes dynamically when that highest printed value changes. In your hand or deck its power is 0. Normal modifiers and +1 counters can then modify Mimic after its starting power is established.
Copycat: Copycat can copy on-play, Ongoing, Special, or Talent abilities. Copying an ability does not copy the other minion's name. Ignore play prerequisites that no longer make sense because Copycat is already in play, but still apply conditions of the copied ability itself. The copied ability expires if Copycat leaves play or at the end of the turn as the current wording specifies.
“...Really?”: You may destroy one of your minions and immediately replay that same card from the discard pile if it satisfies the effect's power condition.
Bacta the Future and Transmogrify: If the chosen minion is protected from destruction, AEG's clarification says to continue resolving the remainder of the ability rather than treating the whole card as failed.
Cellular Bonding: Its copied action ability continues as long as Cellular Bonding remains in play even if the original action later leaves play. If there is no legal play-on-minion action to copy when Cellular Bonding is played, discard it with no effect. Merely copying text does not automatically satisfy a prerequisite printed on the copied action.
Genetic Shift: The mode that boosts all of your minions affects only those already in play when the Action resolves.
Super Spies
Super Spies gather information, manipulate deck order, and punish opposing card plays.
Secret Agent: If another player's Action destroys Secret Agent, that player still discards a card because Secret Agent's triggered effect has already been created by the Action play.
Informant: If you look at another player's deck, return those cards in the same order. Only when looking at your own deck may you rearrange them as the card allows.
From Q With Love: The card discarded to earn the extra play may be one of the two cards just drawn.
Mindraker: When looking at multiple buried or stored cards attached to the same card, their controller may later rearrange those hidden cards so the exact identities are not left marked by your inspection.
Moon Zero Three: This later official Titan is played by giving up the regular Action play as described on the Titan. If another Titan immediately causes a clash, the on-play hand look still occurred because the clash happens after both Titans are in play.
Time Travelers
Time Travelers repeatedly return, replay, recycle, and reorder cards.
Doctor When and Do Over!: If you choose to replay the returned minion as the extra minion, do so immediately; the extra play cannot be saved for later in the turn.
1.21 Gigawatts: The “or” is exclusive: choose all Actions or all minions from your discard pile, not both categories.
It's Astounding: Play the Action from the discard pile immediately, before It's Astounding itself finishes and goes to the discard pile.
Time is Fleeting: When selecting a base from the base discard pile to replace the scored base, you cannot choose the same base that just scored.
Time Walk: Follow the current AEG timing for the extra plays and card draw. Extra cards granted by a card must be played at the time the ability gives them unless the ability explicitly says they may be saved.
Time Box: This later official Titan uses its own counters for tracking its abilities; those are not +1 power counters unless its card says so. Before the Titan is actually in play, other effects cannot treat those tracking counters as if they were counters on an in-play card.
Accessibility play notes
For Shapeshifters, announce exactly which card or ability is being copied and state the copied ability before resolving it. For Super Spies, when privately inspecting cards, state only information the rules make public; preserve hidden information for all other players. When cards are returned to the top or bottom of a deck, announce the number of cards and whether their order was changed.
For play-on-minion actions, keep each action physically associated with its minion and read the full list of attached actions when a minion moves or scores. For Time Travelers, announce whether an extra play must occur immediately, and distinguish cards returned to hand from cards placed on top or bottom of the deck.
