Smash Up: That '70s Expansion Rules
Smash Up: That '70s Expansion Rules
That '70s Expansion adds Truckers, Disco Dancers, Vigilantes, and Kung Fu Fighters. Use the normal Smash Up rules. The current AEG comprehensive rules include functional errata for several cards and a later official Titan for the Kung Fu Fighters.
Truckers
Truckers specialize in Actions played on bases and in transferring those Actions as their “vehicles” move around the table.
Actions on a base versus Actions on a minion: An Action attached to a minion at a base is not itself an Action “played on the base.” This distinction matters to Convoy, El Bandido, Hotwire, Rubber Chicken, Skinny Minnie, Rally, The Greasy Spoon, Truck Stop, and similar cards.
Rally: Calculate its power bonus from the Actions on that base when Rally resolves. The bonus does not later recalculate merely because more Actions arrive or leave. Actions attached to minions do not count.
High-Speed Chase: Once its bonus has been created, destroying the Action later does not retroactively erase the already-created temporary effect unless the current wording explicitly makes the bonus Ongoing.
Truck Stop: At the start of your turn, its transfer is between Actions played directly on bases, not Actions attached to minions.
Disco Dancers
Disco Dancers copy effects from standard Actions that directly affect minions. This is one of the more technical factions in Smash Up.
What can be copied: The copied piece must actually be an effect that affects a minion. Merely choosing a minion or playing a minion is not itself an affectable effect. A copy target cannot already be one of the minions directly affected by the original Action.
One effect per card: Dancing King, Diva, We Are Family, and Funky Town each copy at most one eligible effect from a given Action as limited by their current text. A minion can receive separate copies from several different copying cards.
Do not repeat setup costs: If an Action performs some earlier step and then affects a minion, copying the later effect does not repeat the earlier step. For example, if a card moves a minion and then puts counters on “that minion,” copying the move does not automatically copy the later counters unless the copying rule specifically says it does.
Delayed effects: If the effect being copied will happen later, decide to copy it when the standard Action is played, not later when the delayed effect finally occurs.
Get Down Tonight and I'm So Excited: Use AEG's current errata, which counts/draws according to the number of minions actually affected by the Action's current wording.
Roller: Current errata checks whether Roller had no +1 power counters when the standard Action was played before granting the extra counters.
Vigilantes
Vigilantes have many unique power-4 minions and specialize in reacting to movement, Action plays, and bases nearing scoring.
Brojak: You do not have to react to the first eligible minion movement of the turn; you may wait for a later movement. Its current wording can move Brojak to the same destination and/or place a +1 counter.
Jacky Bill: Its counter trigger responds to other players playing Actions. Its breakpoint reduction is based on the counters currently on Jacky Bill when the start-of-turn ability is used.
Feeling Lucky?: The attached Ongoing trigger looks at your deck after the attached minion's controller plays Actions, while its before-scoring Special uses your deck to determine whether that minion is destroyed.
Make My Day: Use printed power for the destruction threshold under the current wording.
Who Loves Ya, Baby?: The revealed power-4 minion may be drawn or immediately played as the extra minion as the current card allows.
Kung Fu Fighters
Kung Fu Fighters build and transfer +1 power counters and reward careful Talent timing.
Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting: Resolve players in clockwise order starting with the current player. A player who originally had a minion at the chosen base may still perform that player's destruction even if all of that player's own minions have already been destroyed before their turn in the resolution.
Expert Timing: It can transfer counters and/or grant an extra Talent use as the card specifies, including during its before-scoring Special timing.
Fast as Lightning: Its temporary power and replacement-from-discard effect are created together for the selected minion and last for the stated duration.
Sifu: This later official Titan is played by transferring enough +1 counters from your minions to it. It improves future counter transfers and can itself move counters or seed a minion that currently has none.
Accessibility play notes
For Truckers, identify every Action as either “on the base” or “on a minion” whenever it enters play or is transferred. For Disco Dancers, announce the original standard Action, which minion it directly affects, then each Disco card that copies one specific effect and which minion receives the copy. This avoids losing track of copied versus original effects.
For Vigilantes and Kung Fu Fighters, announce all +1 counter totals after transfers. During Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting, explicitly call players in clockwise order and announce each chosen destruction. If Sifu is used, keep Titan counters separate from minion counters and announce every transfer.
