Snake Oil: Crude Oil Rules

Expansion note: This expansion uses the standard Snake Oil rules. Add the expansion cards to the appropriate Snake Oil decks and play normally.

Setting Up

  1. Place the Word Cards and Customer Cards within reach of all players.
  2. Each player draws six Word Cards.
  3. Choose the first Customer.

Playing the Game

  1. The Customer draws a Customer Card, chooses either side, reads that role aloud, and becomes that Customer for the round.
  2. Every other player combines two Word Cards from hand to invent a product for that Customer.
  3. Players pitch their products one at a time. A pitch should normally be kept to about 30 seconds.
  4. After all pitches, the Customer chooses the product they like best. The winning salesperson keeps the Customer Card.
  5. Discard the Word Cards used in that round. Every player draws back up to six Word Cards.
  6. The Customer role passes to the player on the left. Continue until every player has been the Customer once.

Winning

After every player has served as Customer once, the player with the most Customer Cards wins.

If players are tied, play an additional tiebreaker round. Only the tied players pitch; the other players determine the winner. If everyone is tied, continue until each player has served as Customer a second time.

Optional Variations

Larger Hands

For more product-building choices, agree before play to use eight or ten Word Cards per player instead of six.

Large-Group Play

For a large audience, use three contestants at a time. Contestants create and pitch products for one Customer Card, and the audience votes on the best pitch. Winners can advance to a final round.

Tournament Play

For a larger tournament, divide players into smaller groups, play a complete game in each group, and have the group winners play a final game.
