UNO Flip Rules

UNO Flip Rules

UNO Flip uses a double-sided deck. Every card has a Light Side and a Dark Side. Everyone begins on the Light Side. A Flip card turns the entire game over to the opposite side.

Goal

Be the first player to get rid of all cards in your hand. For multi-round scoring, the first player to reach 500 points wins.

Setup

  1. Make sure every card is facing the same way, with the Light Side visible.
  2. Shuffle and deal 7 cards to each player.
  3. Place the rest face down as the draw pile, Light Side down and Dark Side up on the hidden side.
  4. Turn over the top card to start the discard pile. Begin on the Light Side.

Basic Play

On your turn, play one card that matches the top discard by color, number, or symbol. You may also play an appropriate Wild card.

If you do not play a card, draw one. If the card you draw is playable, you may play it immediately.

Light-Side Action Cards

  • Draw One: the next player draws 1 card and loses their turn.
  • Reverse: reverse the direction of play.
  • Skip: the next player loses their turn.
  • Flip: flip every player's hand, the draw pile, and the discard pile to the Dark Side. Continue play using the newly exposed side.
  • Wild: choose the color that continues play.
  • Wild Draw Two: choose the next color; the next player draws 2 cards and loses their turn. Play this only when you do not have a card matching the current color.

Dark-Side Action Cards

  • Draw Five: the next player draws 5 cards and loses their turn.
  • Reverse: reverse the direction of play.
  • Skip Everyone: all other players are skipped, so you immediately take another turn.
  • Flip: flip all hands, the draw pile, and the discard pile back to the Light Side.
  • Wild: choose the color that continues play.
  • Wild Draw Color: choose a color. The next player draws cards one at a time until they draw a card of that color, then loses their turn. Play this only when you do not have a card matching the current color.

Calling UNO

When you have one card left, call “UNO.” If another player catches you before the next player's turn begins, draw 2 cards.

Going Out

The round ends when a player gets rid of their final card. If the final card is an action card that makes another player draw, that draw is completed before scoring.

Optional Scoring

The round winner scores the value of all cards left in opponents' hands, using the value shown on the side currently in play. Continue playing rounds until someone reaches 500 points.

Accessibility Note

Whenever a Flip card is played, announce “Light Side” or “Dark Side” aloud after all cards have been turned so every player knows which side is active.
